What Is Thanos’ Sword Made Of?

The first three phases of the MCU had a clear villain in the form of Thanos, who used the Infinity Stones to erase half of the universe from existence. Of course, the Avengers had something to say about the actions of the Mad Titan when they got the Infinity Stones back from the past and used them to undo what Thanos did, only for the past version of Thanos to appear and threaten to remake the universe. Thanos was such a threat to the Avengers in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ that he was even able to destroy Captain America’s Vibranium shield. So, what is Thanos’ sword made of?

Article Breakdown: Thanos’ sword is strong enough to destroy Vibranium, which itself is capable of absorbing kinetic energy. The only MCU substance strong enough to damage Vibranium is Uru, which is the same material used for Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. It is likely that Thanos got his sword from Eitri or the other dwarves of Nidavellir. What Substance Is Thanos’ Sword Made From? One of the things that we saw during the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ was the fact that Thanos was now stronger than the one that we saw in the events of ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ This was the same Thanos, albeit from different timelines, as the one in ‘Endgame’ came from the past. The difference in their strengths was determined by the fact that Thanos in ‘Endgame’ was wearing his armor and was using his double-edged sword, both of which were absent in ‘Infinity War.’

Now, one of the things that we know about Thanos’ sword is that it was strong enough to actually give the Big Three of the Avengers some problem. It was able to go toe-to-toe with Thor’s Mjolnir and Stormbreaker and was strong enough to withstand some of the strongest blasts of Iron Man’s strongest suit. But the most impressive part was the fact that it was able to not only damage Captain America’s Vibranium shield but also tear a huge chunk off of it.

This means that Thanos’ sword should be made from one of the strongest materials in the entire MCU, and the only material we could think of is Uru. That’s because no other material in the MCU has been able to damage Vibranium except Vibranium itself, and it is possible that another material from the cosmos was the only material strong enough to destroy Cap’s shield.

We know that Uru is the same material that was used to create Mjolnir and even Stormbreaker. The dwarves of Nidavellir were the ones responsible for forging these weapons as they had access to Uru, which is a metal that’s incredibly durable and could only be forged using the heat coming from a dying star. And Uru itself has magical properties.

Uru was the same metal that Eitri used to forge the Infinity Gauntlet, and there’s a good reason why Thanos went to him, as he understood that only a material like Uru could handle the full power of all of the Infinity Stones.

At this point, there is no other material that’s capable of matching the prowess of Vibranium, as we all know that Uru is the only likely candidate. Adamantium is yet to be a thing in the MCU because the X-Men are yet to join this universe. And Adamantium, canonically, is man-made and isn’t some material that comes from another part of the universe.

This all leads to the possibility that Thanos’ sword was made from Uru, which isn’t exactly a metal but is a rock-like mineral with the properties of metal. And we all know that the strongest weapons in the MCU were made using Uru.

Uru is stronger than Vibranium The reason why Thanos’ sword was likely made from Uru is the fact that we saw how it was able to destroy Captain America’s shield. Of course, we know that Vibranium is said to be strong enough to absorb kinetic energy and redirect it. We saw this when Thor struck Cap using Mjolnir, only for the kinetic energy to bounce back.

Uru has always been a stronger material compared to Vibranium. But there are some differences between these two. Vibranium is easier to manipulate, as we’ve seen how the Wakandans basically built an entire civilization using Vibranium. We also know that Vibranium is more durable due to its ability to absorb and redirect kinetic energy. But Uru is stronger in terms of its density and hardness, and that’s why it is better used for weapons compared to Vibranium.

But if that’s the case, why is it that Cap’s shield wasn’t destroyed when Thor struck it with Mjolnir? Well, this is probably due to the fact that Mjolnir is a blunt weapon that is easier for Vibranium to absorb as compared to a sword made out of Uru. And basic physics would allow us to see why that’s the case.

When an object with a flat surface hits another object with a flat surface, there is less force applied to the surface of the striking object due to the fact that the force is equally dispersed on the blunt surface. On the other hand, a bladed weapon like a sword is able to cut through flat surfaces due to the fact that all of the force exerted when striking using a sword is focused on a smaller surface area compared to a hammer, which has a larger surface area.

In the MCU, we also saw that Mjolnir was hitting the front part of the shield, which is flat, thus allowing the kinetic energy to disperse through the larger surface area of the shield. On the other hand, Thanos struck Cap’s shield from the top, which has a much smaller surface area compared to the front. As such, someone like Thanos, who has strength that’s greater than Thor, would be able to damage a Vibranium shield when striking it using a bladed weapon forged using Uru.

Where did Thanos get his sword from? We know that all of the weapons forged using Uru came from Nidavellir. It is also known that the dwarves of Nidavellir are the only ones who have access to Uru and are loyal to Asgard. If that’s the case, where did Thanos get his sword from?

It is possible that Thanos has had his sword for centuries, given the fact that he is a thousand years old. As such, there’s a chance that he got it from Nidavellir a long time ago when he was yet to become the Mad Titan who vowed to reshape the entire universe. But it is also possible that he got his sword from another place.

That’s because almost everything that the dwarves of Nidavellir forged using Uru has magical properties, given the fact that Uru has a strong affinity with magic. On the other hand, Thanos’ sword didn’t show anything magical as it was simply a very strong and durable weapon. This means that another person probably forged the sword a long time ago. But given that Thanos and his sword are now gone, it is unlikely that we are ever going to get answers to our questions.
